The 8 most spectacular displays of forklift skill

A forklift operator who works with precision, control and skill is a tremendous asset to any business in the materials handling sector. Combined with patience and safety awareness, these virtues help to get the job done well.

The following clips show how forklift truck operating skills can be taken to extreme levels. Watch and be amazed.

1. Coin flip

Using fine control of the lift truck’s hydraulics, a driver flips a coin onto the fork and then drops it into a narrow-necked bottle. You might expect the operator to choose a bang-up-to-date small electric lift truck with sophisticated electronics to perform such a feat. In fact he uses what looks like an old 40 or 50 tonne diesel counterbalance. Now that’s impressive.

2. Anything you can do…

To make things a little more difficult, this operator does the same trick but deposits the coin into a bottle 20 feet in the air.

3. Boxing clever

With exceptional dexterity, a forklift truck packs boxes into other boxes.

4. Perfect balance

The challenge here is to balance ten pallets on one upright pallet. That would be hard enough to do manually.

5. Lifting the lifter

Don’t try this at work. The first forklift truck driver skilfully loads a large container into a trailer. It’s quite a tight fit. With its forks remaining under the load, the lift truck is raised by a second forklift so it can enter the trailer and push the container to the front. It then reverses back onto the second truck’s forks and is lowered to the ground. This is pretty spectacular, but there must be a safer way.

6. Narrow aisle counterbalance

The counterbalance forklift in this video thinks it’s a narrow aisle truck. The loads are a bit too tall for to be completely safe, but the operator’s precision in manoeuvring them through a block stacking aisle which is only marginally wider than the truck must be applauded.

7. Neat moves

To call this demonstration spectacular is perhaps overstating things, but it does show a fine example of neat pallet handling. If you’re not convinced, try to perform the same materials handling operations yourself in the same time and see how you compare.

8. So easy

A ride-on stacker in the hands of a skilled operator is featured here. His flawless display of stacking and retrieval makes it look simple, but it’s not as easy as it looks. This kind of routine operation is not exactly a fast-moving spectator event, so the film has been speeded up to let you appreciate the performance in a very short clip.
